Day 17 — Building PRO-Only Analytics in a Django SaaS Platform

Today, I implemented role-based access control for analytics within my AI Phishing Defense Platform. The objective was to restrict access to advanced usage statistics exclusively to PRO and ENTERPRISE API keys.

To achieve this, instead of utilizing the default DRF token authentication, I developed a custom API Key Authentication system. This custom authentication class (APIKeyAuthentication) reads the "X-API-Key" from the request header and attaches it to the request object (request.api_key).

A crucial lesson learned was that authentication must be side-effect free, meaning no database updates should occur during the authentication process. This ensures the efficiency and security of the authentication flow, preventing unnecessary complexity and potential concurrency issues.
